The mesh doesn't prevent cracks from forming—concrete will crack as it shrinks and temperature changes occur—but it holds cracks tight and prevents the slab from separating into independent sections.
For driveways that will experience heavier loads (RV pads, commercial access routes, or areas where the subgrade is particularly poor), thicker slabs or rebar instead of wire mesh may be warranted.

Control joints are deliberate cuts or formed grooves in the concrete that direct where cracks will occur. Without control joints, random cracks appear wherever the concrete experiences the most stress. In a 4-inch slab, control joints should be spaced no more than 8 to 12 feet apart—a rule of thumb of 2 to 3 times the slab thickness in feet.
Joints should be cut to at least 1 inch deep (1/4 of the slab depth) and ideally placed within 6 to 12 hours of finishing, before the concrete fully hardens and random cracking begins. In Coachella's heat, this window can be compressed, so timing and crew preparation are critical.

Sealing and Long-Term Protection
After your driveway is finished and cured (typically 7 days in cool weather, 3-5 days in summer heat), applying a penetrating sealer is one of the best investments you can make for durability.
A quality silane/siloxane water repellent sealer penetrates the concrete surface and blocks water and salt intrusion without creating a glossy film. In Coachella's intense sun and occasional monsoon storms (July through September can bring sudden, heavy rain), a penetrating sealer reduces the risk of scaling, efflorescence, and freeze-thaw damage (less common here, but still a consideration in the cooler months).
